The 2015 Toyota Texas Bass Classic – an event which draws the world’s top professional bass anglers — has been set for Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, at Lake Fork.

“After a world-record setting event in 2014 we are very excited to return to Lake Fork in 2015,” said Lenny Francoeur, tournament director. “The Quitman community has been so welcoming and the bass fishing at Lake Fork is world-class. We can’t wait to get back there next spring.”

In addition to new dates, tournament officials announced the field size will be refined from 50 contestants to 38 of the world’s best professional anglers.  The 2015 classic will invite the top 15 in 2014 Angler of the Year points from both the FLW Tour and Bassmaster Elite Series, 7 exemptions and defending 3-time champion Keith Combs.

All 38 anglers will compete on Lake Fork for the first two days, with the field being reduced to the top 10 for the final round on May 25. The tournament will remain a non-entry fee event with all anglers receiving guaranteed prize money. Through a continued partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the classic will continue to focus on conservation and adhere to a strict catch, weigh and immediate release format. Over the last eight years, the TTBC has donated more than $2 million to TPWD, an effort that will continue in 2015.

“We were proud to see the record-setting fish catches at the 2014 event,” said TPWD’s Dave Terre. “Those catches were a direct result of our progressive fisheries management practices, including special fishing regulations, fish stocking, and fish-habitat improvements with the Sabine River Authority. This tournament, including its unique catch-weigh-immediate release format, gives us the opportunity to show the world just how good Lake Fork really is.  We are thankful for the opportunity to do this again in 2015 and also for all the benefits this event provides to TPWD.”

Anglers qualifying for the classic join a prestigious rank of past competitors. By drawing from the two major tours, the TTBC field consistently boasts the very best anglers in the world every year.

TTBC in 2014 was one for the record books, helping to show the world how amazing a fishery Lake Fork truly is.  The previous record for a three-day, tour-level event was set in 2000 at the Bassmaster California Western Invitational on Clear Lake by Byron Velvick with 83 pounds, 5 ounces (15 fish). That record was broken eight times on the final round of the 2014 TTBC.

Keith Combs, the new title holder, reeled in a three-day weight of 110 pounds (15 fish). That broke the existing record by 26 pounds, 11 ounces. Additionally, two of the anglers – Combs and Stetson Blaylock — entered the Century Club (more than 100 pounds). That had never happened at a three -day tour event. But Lake Fork is not your average bass fishery, and Combs’ is not your average champion.

“It’s a major career achievement just to qualify to fish the TTBC, but to be a three-time champion against the best anglers in the world, and to set the world record last year, it’s just amazing,” said Combs. “I am so proud to represent my home state of Texas, , but I am especially proud of the great things the TTBC does to raise awareness and funding for Texas Parks and Wildlife.”

In addition to three days of world championship competition, TTBC organizers plan a full line up of premier country music acts, vendor expo showcases, outdoor family activities and more for next year’s Memorial Day weekend event. Ticket and concert information will be available in early 2015. For more information and event news, visit www.toyotatexasbassclassic.com.

As a native resident with an insatiable sweet tooth, I have always had a strong positive connection with our local Girl Scout troops. From food drives, to community service, to cookie sales, the girls are out to make a difference. Now, if I can just convince my wife that I know nothing about the entire sleeve of Thin Mints missing from the cupboard.

One of the great pleasures of my job as the manager of the Austin Microsoft Store, is the ability to give back to local community groups. When the Microsoft Store first opened at The Domain in April 2012, we donated more than $500,000 in software to the Girl Scouts of Central Texas (GXCTX). In addition to donations, we host weekly workshops offering local scouts a chance to get hands on with technology. Recent workshops have taught Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts about internet safety, apps and more, all a part of earning a “Computer Expert” badge, which they can proudly wear on their vests.

In the past 100 years, the Girl Scouts of America have been teaching girls values such as honesty, compassion, and citizenship through a variety of outlets including community service and outdoor exploration. The recent tech boom in the Austin area, coupled with the exponential job growth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, have helped us expand the Girl Scouts’ understanding of technology and computers so they can improve their skills in these ever-evolving areas.

Lolis Garcia-Baab, director of marketing and communications for GSCTX, is a big supporter of the workshops and is excited about the growth she sees in the girls. Her team is working to help create the next female leaders of tomorrow and we’re glad to be able to assist in this challenge.

During our workshops we encourage the girls to express themselves in creative ways, including planning a road trip using the Bing Travel App and writing a letter to the President in Microsoft Word. The girls are learning valuable skills that will give them a head start in today’s tech savvy world.

You have to admit, as a teenager you made choices you would not have made as an adult. I know I did, even as a young adult I made decisions that when I think back on them, I wonder what was I thinking! I worry about my children making the same bad decisions. We, as the parent’s need to guide our children to make the best choices possible. Its not always easy, but it is possible when you have open communication and constantly work on it.

Parents remain the number one influence on their teens decision about drinking. A survey of Texas teens and parents conducted by MADD Texas and made possible by a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation showed that 62 percent of Texas teens say their parents are the motivating factor for them not to drink.

The back-to-school moment is a great time for parents to start or continue an on-going conversation with their children about the dangers of alcohol, as many teens will encounter more opportunities or peer pressure to drink during the school year.

A survey of Texas teens and parents underscored a huge disconnect in what parents believe their teens face in terms of pressure to drink alcohol versus the reality of what their teens experience when it comes to alcohol.

  • 73 percent of teens claim the fact that most or all of their friends drink motivates them to drink, while 59 percent of Texas parents recognize this as a factor.
  • 55 percent of teens say that their peers drinking to get drunk also motivates them to drink, while only 27 percent of parents realize this is a motivator for their children.
  • The good news is that parents are the No. 1 influence on their teen’s decisions about drinking.

Parents remain the single biggest influence on their teen’s decision to not drink. A GfK Roper Youth Report showed that 74 percent of kids (8-17) said their parents are the leading influence on their decisions about drinking.

  • 62 percent of Texas teens say their parents are the motivating factor for them not to drink.
  • Interestingly, in Texas, parents and teens agree on one key thing – 62 percent of both parents and teens believe it is completely unacceptable to drink before the age of 21.

What parents do and say matters, and some teens may be getting mixed messages.

  • 71 percent of teens reported that they were aware of parties where a parent or adult provided teens with alcohol.
  • Yet, only 61 percent of Texas parents said they were aware of such parties.
  • Parents reported that it might be ok for teens to experiment with alcohol for certain occasions:
    • 65 percent of parents said allowing teens to drink at a family gathering such as Thanksgiving was permissible,
    • 49 percent of parents said a New Year’s Eve toast was permissible; and,
    • 47 percent said it was ok for teens to drink as long as they were at home and not driving.
  • A national survey conducted by MADD and Nationwide showed that teens who receive the clear message from their parents that it is completely unacceptable to drink are more than 80 percent less likely to drink than teens who receive other messages.

It’s never too late to talk to with your children about the dangers of alcohol. MADD’s Power of Parents program offers informational materials, resources and workshops to help parents talk with their children about alcohol.

Back-to-School time is a great time for parents to start or continue an on-going conversation with their children about the dangers of alcohol because many teens continually encounter more opportunities or peer pressure to drink. MADD encourages parents to talk with their teens about the many dangers and consequences of underage drinking, as well as the harmful and deadly impact of drinking and driving at any age.

MADD developed its Power of Parents program and resources to help parents feel more confident about talking with their teens about the dangers of underage drinking. MADD’s 30-minute Power of Parents workshops, along with the free handbook, help parents and caregivers of teens start an ongoing conversation about the dangers of underage drinking. It’s called Power of Parents because research has found that parents are the number one influence in their child’s decisions about drinking. The program is based on a handbook model developed by Pennsylvania State University researcher Dr. Robert Turrisi. Based on two decades of research, the Power of Parents handbook has been shown to significantly reduce drinking behaviors when parents read it and start talking with their teens.

The Motherhood is joining MADD Texas for this online Twitter workshop that will encourage and empower parents with how to talk with their teens about the many dangers and consequences of underage drinking, as well as the deadly impact of drinking and driving at any age.

Make sure you RVSP for the MADD Power of Parents Program workshop on Twitter

Date/Time:  Thursday, August 14, 1-2pm EST (12 noon CST)

Prizes: The Motherhood will award five prizes to participants who answer trivia questions tweeted by @TheMotherhood25 correctly. Each prize includes a Power of Parents Handbook and a one-on-one session with a Certified Power of Parents Trainer.

“We wanted to preserve as much of the spirit of the old Alamo South Lamar but extend on the ideas we explored in the first place,” said CEO and founder Tim League. “We hired the same artists, muralist Heyd Fontenot and sculptor Evan Voyles, to update the work they originally created.  We’ve also added some great new additions including a Shining themed photo booth and some truly outrageous new karaoke room themes.”

ThunderCloud Subs announces the launch of its annual competition to design artwork for the 20,000 T-shirts and other collateral materials for the 24th annual ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot. Registration is now open for the hugely popular Thanksgiving Day tradition benefiting Caritas of Austin.

Each year, artists ranging from graphic design professionals to middle school students compete to create the event artwork. The Art Contest winner will receive gift certificates for 365 subs and will see their creation all over town on T-shirts, event guides, posters, website, social media, and more. The 2014 ThunderCloud Subs Art Contest entry deadline is September 6, and winner will be announced September 15.

Last year’s Art Contest winner, Carolyn Letchworth, says that the best part of the experience was being able to help people in need.

“Not only did I absolutely not expect to win, but my husband had to practically twist my arm to get me to enter. I gave out quite a few free sub vouchers to my homeless friends in the Burnet and Anderson area. It’s been a cool experience overall, but I most enjoyed knowing that I was able to help others get a meal who might not have eaten otherwise,” says Letchworth.

All proceeds from the Trot go to Caritas of Austin, a local charity that supports Austin’s working poor and homeless people. ThunderCloud has raised more than $2 million for Caritas since the event began in 1991.

“It’s always fun to see the artwork people come up with,” says Mike Haggerty, co-owner of ThunderCloud Subs and run director of the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot. “This event is all about engaging our community, and the contest really kicks that off every year.”

Early online registration for the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot is $20 for the untimed five-mile, $25 for the timed five-mile, $18 for the one-mile walk, and $8 for the Stepping Stone School Kids’ K. All registrations include a T-shirt and runners guide. Registration prices will increase starting November 1.

It’s ‘back-to-school’ time, which means getting both home and garden prepped for Fall! Hundreds of Central Texas’ most trusted experts will convene for the 19th Annual Austin Fall Home and Garden Show August 15th – 17th at the Austin Convention Center, 500 East Cesar Chavez. For nearly two decades, the Austin Fall Home & Garden Show has been dazzling guests with an impressive line-up of more than 200 vendors on everything from kitchens to landscapes and interior design to the ‘ultimate’ garage.

The Austin Fall Home & Garden Show is especially pleased to present Pete Nelson, of Animal Planet’s wildly popular ‘Treehouse Masters.’ He will be delighting audiences of all ages with his wild and wonderful treehouse creations. Presentations will be scheduled throughout the weekend. The true treehouse ‘master’ will field questions, give advice and share ideas with audiences.

Another recent, exciting addition to the Show is a special Gardening Stage. Guests with a green thumb (or those who wish to have a green thumb) can enjoy Expert Gardening Seminars on a wide variety of fascinating topics by Travis County Master Gardeners, Austin Pond Society, Bamboo Society, and Goodness Grows in Austin.

In addition to the garden seminars and beautiful landscaping booths, the show covers virtually every design, remodeling and building topic. Gorgeous fully furnished bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms await, as well as the ‘ultimate’ garage, closet organization and even fully assembled pools and spas. There are also experts on home security, budget shopping and greening a home.

One of the best elements of the Austin Fall Home and Garden Show is the rare opportunity to chat with experts on almost any design or building challenge, all under one roof. Dozens of roomy aisles allow for browsing countertops, floors, showers, tile, appliances, hardware and the latest multi-media, while talking face-to-face with the pros.

On the NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) Stage, there will be an outstanding lineup of speakers presenting a number of compelling building and remodeling topics. They will hold fun and interactive seminars, answer questions, chat with guests and offer demonstrations.

Luckily, there’s no need to hire a sitter for the kids, because the Austin Fall Home & Garden Show has a wide range of activities for the entire family. A special ‘Kid’s Zone’ offers safe and fun activities by the Travis County Master Gardeners, Kids Arts & Crafts by Macaroni Kids, Kids Movies by COSTCO, coloring and cafts. New York Life will also be offering a Child ID Program for parents with fingerprinting and photographs.

Guests can also shop for handmade, artisan and GO TEXAN gifts and treats at the Art, Gift and Gourmet Center.

Finally, a house wouldn’t be a home without a family pet. The Austin Humane Society will be onsite with some furry friends ready for adoption. There will also be a display of animals, both the exotic and the familiar, by the Capitol of Texas Zoo.

At the door, the show is $8.50 for adults (17+), $6.50 for seniors (65+) all weekend, and free for those 16 and under. E-tickets can be purchased online for $6.50. And there is complimentary admission for all active duty military personnel (valid ID required). Visit www.austinhomeandgardenshow.com for a $1.00 off admission coupon. About Celebrity Guest Pete Nelson:

Pete got excited about treehouses at age 5 when his dad built him a tiny one behind the garage of their Ridgewood, NJ home. The scope and size of Pete’s treehouse fantasies expanded from there, but all of that appeared to run its course by the time he received his driver’s license. Unfashionably, Pete’s treehouse fantasies returned after graduating from college in Colorado with an economics degree. The carpenter and home-builder within him could not be silenced, and with an eye to become “the treehouse guy”, Pete embarked on a career path unique in this age.

The 1994 publication of “Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb” was the first book of its kind, and has culminated in the publication of five more books on the subject, a thriving treehouse building and supply company, a treehouse hotel, and a hit television series on Animal Planet.

Pete has been signing his books with the tag line “Be in a Tree” since the earliest days of the movement. He would like nothing more than to put you there. He lives with his wife, Judy, in Fall City, Washington.
